What asbestos sheeting actually looks like

There is no visual test for asbestos. There is, however, a short list of physical features that separate a sheet worth testing from one that almost certainly is not — and knowing them saves most people a laboratory fee.

Let us be exact about what this page can do. It cannot tell you whether a sheet contains asbestos, because asbestos fibres are microscopic and the cement around them looks the same either way. What it can do is help you decide whether a material belongs in the worth testing pile or the almost certainly modern pile, which is a genuinely useful distinction when you are standing in front of a wall with a renovation planned.

Start with the date, not the sheet

Age is the strongest single signal. Asbestos cement products were manufactured in Australia for most of the twentieth century, were progressively phased out through the 1980s, and a total ban on manufacture, use and import took effect at the end of 2003. In practice that gives three rough bands:

  • Built or renovated before the mid-1980s — fibre cement sheeting should be treated as suspect until tested.
  • Mid-1980s to 2003 — a genuine grey zone. Asbestos-free fibre cement was already widely available and widely used, but stock sat in yards for years.
  • After 2003 — sheeting installed new should not contain asbestos, although reused or salvaged material complicates even this.

Note what the date does not tell you: houses are renovated in layers, and a 1995 bathroom in a 1955 house can have 1955 sheeting behind it.

The physical tells

Up close, several features push a sheet towards the suspect pile:

  • Thickness. Old asbestos cement flat sheet is commonly around 4–6 mm and feels dense and rigid for its thinness.
  • The back face. Many asbestos cement sheets carry a faint dimpled, pitted or linen-like texture on the reverse from the manufacturing process. Modern sheet tends to be smoother and more uniform.
  • Edges. Cut edges look compacted and slightly fibrous rather than granular, and old sheets are often square-edged rather than recessed for jointing.
  • Fixings and joints. Sheets fixed with clouts at close, regular centres and finished with timber or aluminium cover strips over the joints is a very characteristic older detail.
  • Sheet sizes. Older sheets were made in imperial sizes, so a wall that measures out in feet rather than millimetres is a small clue about its age.
  • Corrugated profile. On roofs and fences, the older asbestos cement corrugated profile is a different pitch and depth from modern metal, and it is grey through the material rather than coated.

What is not a tell

Plenty of widely repeated signals mean nothing at all. Colour does not: asbestos cement weathers to grey, but so does everything else. Moss and chalkiness indicate age and surface degradation, not composition. Painted or unpainted is irrelevant. And the fact that a sheet is called fibro tells you only that it is fibre cement — the word covers both the asbestos and the asbestos-free generations, and always has.

Manufacturer markings are the one apparent exception, and they are unreliable in a different way: many products were never marked, markings sit on the hidden face, and some later asbestos-free products carry stamps that people misread as proof of the opposite.

What to do with a suspicion

If the material is intact, painted and not in the way, the honest answer is frequently to leave it alone and note it. Bonded asbestos cement in good condition holds its fibres, and disturbing it to satisfy curiosity is the one action that creates the risk you were worried about.

If it is damaged, or you are about to renovate, that is the point to get an answer rather than a guess. That means a sample taken properly and analysed by a NATA-accredited laboratory — the only step in Australia that produces a result rather than an opinion.

And whichever way it goes: do not sand it, do not cut it with a power tool, do not drill it, do not water-blast it and do not break a piece off to have a look. Those are the five actions that convert a stable sheet into airborne fibre, and they are the reason this page exists.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell if something is asbestos from a photo?

No. Nobody can, including licensed assessors. Asbestos fibres are microscopic and asbestos cement looks identical to modern fibre cement. A photo can tell you whether a material is worth testing; only a NATA-accredited laboratory analysis can tell you what it is.

My house was built in 1995. Do I still need to worry?

Sheeting installed new in 1995 is less likely to contain asbestos, but the ban on manufacture, use and import did not take full effect until the end of 2003, and older houses are renovated in layers. The date of the material matters more than the date on the title.

Does 'fibro' mean asbestos?

No. Fibro is the Australian word for fibre cement sheeting, and it covers both the older asbestos-containing generation and the modern asbestos-free one. The word tells you the material type, not its composition.

Is it safe to just leave suspect sheeting where it is?

Intact, undisturbed bonded material in good condition is generally regarded as low risk, which is why leaving it alone is often the right call. What changes that is damage, weathering or any work that cuts, sands, drills or pressure-cleans it.
