How to tell whether a material might contain asbestos

Nobody can identify asbestos by looking at it — not us, not a builder, not a photo on a forum. What you can do is work out whether a material is worth testing, and that is a decision you can make in ten minutes.

Start with the single most useful fact in this whole subject: asbestos cannot be identified by eye. The fibres are microscopic. A sheet of asbestos cement and a sheet of modern fibre cement can look identical, sit in the same place, and weather the same way. Anyone who tells you over a photo that something “is” or “isn't” asbestos is guessing, and the guess is worthless in both directions — it either frightens you about a harmless sheet or reassures you about a dangerous one.

What you can do is triage. Three things move a material from unknown to worth testing: when the house was built or last renovated, where the material sits, and what it physically looks like up close — thickness, edge profile, the pattern on the back, the fixings. Asbestos cement products were used in Australian housing for decades and were not banned outright until the end of 2003, so a house built or renovated before then is not automatically a problem, but it is automatically a question.

The word you will see everywhere on this site is fibro, which is what Australians call flat or corrugated fibre cement sheeting. It is worth being precise about it, because “fibro” on its own tells you nothing: sheets made before the mid-1980s commonly contained asbestos, sheets made after the phase-out do not, and both are called fibro by everyone including the people selling it.

If the triage below lands on “possible”, the next step is never a scraper and never a drill. It is either leaving it alone, or having a sample taken and analysed by a NATA-accredited laboratory, which is the only thing in Australia that turns a suspicion into an answer.
